Want to Improve your Blog? Be True to Your “Inner Voice.”

There are literally millions of blogs competing for clicks on the Internet. Yet only a small percentage of them actually get read with any regularity.

Want to know one significant difference between a well-written blog and a well-read blog?  After reading a “well-written” blog, you feel informed; after reading a “well-read” blog, you feel engaged.

I’m not suggesting you abandon good composition for gritty-sounding, street language.  Just be more aware of how you sound when you read your blog to yourself! Great bloggers have a writing style which is at once appealing and unique. Their sentences seem to flow together with an easy cadence that belies the hard work it took to achieve their style.

If you want to become a better blogger – and get your share of clicks – then I recommend tapping your inner voice to create a unique experience for readers. By “inner voice,” I mean that your writing style should sound natural to who you are. It should sound authentic and believable to people who know you.

This may sound daunting to those with technical backgrounds. Still, every person has an inner voice. Be it funny and irreverent or edgy and sarcastic, your inner voice can help attract a loyal following to your blog over time.

Here are a couple of bloggers I follow who have developed an authentic voice for their blogs:

  • Great blog post, Dave! I completely agree. Finding your voice isn't as difficult as it sounds. Successful bloggers write the way that they speak, and as though they are talking to someone who is right in front of them.

  • Absolutely! I like your style, it is free flowing and interesting without getting cluttered with products technicalities. And thanks for your PR press release for CareWare, it was very well done. You are a real professional.
I guess that personal blogs are less formals and free style than Professional blogs. Still learning……

  • Thanks for your comments. Writing is truly an exercise in continuous improvement. Professional blogs can be a bit more restrictive but I've seen some pretty creative ones that still come across as professional. I think if you try to entertain your readers while also informing them, you'll never be thought the worse for it.

    Best,
    Dave
